Audiophile Circuits League (ACL)

Welcome to the Audiophile Circuits League. We are a group of musicians and engineers based in Berlin. We are in the very fortunate position of being able to design and build our own equipment, the kind of equipment we want to use.

Of course, there are many other excellent companies making fantastic equipment – much of which we own and love – and so rather than trying to reinvent wheels, we go beyond classic designs.

First we build devices that avoid problems we’ve encountered – everything from irregular performance to awkward connection placements. And we ensure consistent quality, using only carefully selected component, and assembling our equipment here in Germany.

Second, whenever possible, we try to create modules that do something different and offer new possibilities – be that a filter that doesn’t lose the bass when you crank up the resonance, or a VCO which allows gradual morphing from soft- to hard-sync.

One of the best thing about modular is the flexibility and creativity it offers, so if you have any suggestions for new features, revisions, or even new modules, we’d love to hear from you.

NOTE – We at Alpine Mastering Studio are a main distributor for all ACL products in Canada.  Please feel free to reach out on our CONTACT page for which modules you are wanting and we can get back to you with price quotes and shipping times.

Earthquaker Devices

Do you like effects pedals? We do! Here at EarthQuaker Devices, we like pedals so much that we make them one-at-a-time, by hand, the hard way, in the idyllic post-apocalyptic wasteland metropolis of Akron, Ohio, USA – where the soldering smoke blocks out the sun, and the fiery Cuyahoga River pumps white-hot liquid magma into the steam engine that powers our great riff factory in the sky.

In 2015 EarthQuaker Devices renovated the two-story, 15,000 sq. ft. building it currently occupies. Having found a permanent home for 53+ employees and 40+ Devices, EarthQuaker Devices is staying put for now.

To create unique effects units which meet or exceed the needs of the professional touring musician, R&D is performed in-house by Jamie Stillman, who designs each Device to exacting specifications in order to achieve his creative vision, growing EarthQuaker Devices from one musician’s passion project into a lifeline for the musical community of Akron, Ohio.

NOTE – We at Alpine Mastering Studio are a distributor for all Earthquaker Devices products in Canada.  Please feel free to reach out on our CONTACT page for which modules you are wanting and we can get back to you with price quotes and shipping times.

MANLEY

On January 30, 1989, a 20 year old EveAnna on sabbatical from her studies at Columbia University met the crew and was hired on to the production team. She quickly learned to solder and assemble vacuum tube amplifiers, and after training a new team of assemblers, EveAnna worked her way into the Quality Control department.

It was at this time that the first Manley professional products were developed, starting with the original 1u Reference 60dB Microphone Preamplifier and soon followed by the Manley Enhanced Pultec and Mid Frequency Equalizers. These products, along with the Manley Reference Cardioid and Reference Gold microphones, all made their debut at the 1990 Los Angeles AES Show.

Softube

There’s something special about an old tube amp. It’s more than just gear. It’s an entire sonic world: it tells a story, defines a scene, it has a soul.

Softube was chosen by Marshall as its exclusive software partner because our founders know this. With truly exquisite music technology, it’s not enough to merely approximate the sound and function in the software. You have to go deeper. Strive for perfect accuracy, perfect workflow, perfect sound.

Snapshot methods of modeling used to be commonplace in the pro audio industry. Softube doesn’t settle for common; we go for extraordinary. We chose to push the envelope of component-level modeling of analog systems, taking hardware apart and putting it back together in code and at the highest resolution possible.

It’s because of this dogged pursuit of purity that the most respected brands in pro audio trust us with official software versions of their most iconic products. Whether it’s Tube-Tech, Solid State Logic, Buchla, Abbey Road Studios, Trident, Drawmer, or Chandler Limited, designers of the best-sounding gear of all time know that Softube is sound quality.

Our passion for sound superiority is on full display in the gold-standard Weiss DS1-MK3 plugin. In partnership with Weiss Engineering of Switzerland, Softube completed one of the first linefor-line code ports of a digital hardware device into plug-in form.

Softube continues to lead the industry with highly-reviewed, award-winning plug-ins and integrated hardware/software systems that make computer-based studios as intuitive, inspiring, and effective as possible. Perhaps it says it all that legendary, multi-Grammy winning mix engineer Michael Brauer describes the Console 1 system as “the centerpiece” of his hybrid mix setup.

And we never stop innovating. In recent years, we’ve taken our best-in-class technology to instruments, modeling Eurorack synth modules in the Modular plug-in platform and developing new and exciting synths for the modern music maker.

NOTE – Glenn Morrison has been sponsored kindly by Softube with the use of their various digital eurorack modular plugins and some mastering tools, such as their fantastic Weiss replications.

Barefoot

Barefoot Sound has become the leading manufacturer of pro audio recording monitors.  Barefoot’s innovative speaker designs have been embraced by the biggest recording studios, recording artists and producers in the world.  These professionals have chosen Barefoot as the tools they use to make the music you hear on the radio, television and movies everyday.  Barefoot is proud to boast the reputation as the most respected brand in the recording industry.

Barefoot Sound was founded by scientist, engineer and inventor Thomas Barefoot. Growing up financially challenged in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Thomas loved music and dreamed of playing the electric guitar. But his family could not afford one. So at the age of 13 he set out to teach himself how to build guitars and amplifiers.

Working in his school’s wood-shop and learning everything he could from the library, he salvaged parts and materials from around his neighborhood and re-imagined them into musical instruments. He started his first business in high school, building and modifying guitars for his classmates. Thomas’ brilliant skills and entrepreneurial spirit helped him pay for university and eventually earn a degree in physics. Thomas went on to study for his PhD, but after a few years in graduate school, he realized academia was not his passion. He was a builder, an inventor, and his love for music continued to drive him. Even after landing a job at Intel developing semiconductor-manufacturing technology, Thomas never lost sight of his dream.

In his spare time he got heavily involved with the online recording community. Under the moniker “Barefoot”, his real surname, Thomas became known as an online speaker and acoustics “guru.” Through many forum discussions and practice in his home studio, Thomas began to reject the traditional distinctions between nearfield, main and mastering monitors. Thomas concluded that every job, from tracking to mastering, required the same level of sound quality, dynamic range and bass extension. He realized that an all-in-one approach to monitoring was also perfectly suited to the project studios that were burgeoning everywhere. This led Thomas to develop his first studio monitor in 2004. Having only stepped into a professional recording studio a few times, the design standards he set for himself were mostly based on an idealized vision of what studio monitor performance should be, rather than firsthand experience many existing monitors. As it turned out, the speaker he built was not only extraordinarily innovative; it also surpassed the quality and performance of some of the world’s most elite monitor brands.

Having the confidence of his online compatriots, Thomas started receiving orders for his new creation, building each by hand in his garage in San Francisco. By 2006, the fledgling business had grown so much that Thomas left Intel. Barefoot Sound stepped out of the garage and has been taking the recording industry by storm ever since. Barefoot products are expertly crafted in Portland, Oregon.

NOTE – We at Alpine Mastering Studio are a distributor for all Barefoot products in Canada.  Please feel free to reach out on our CONTACT page for which speaker line and product(s) you are wanting and we can get back to you with price quotes and shipping times.
